Royal Caribbean Names Diana Ross Godmother of Star of the Seas

Music legend Diana Ross will serve as Star of the Seas‘ official godmother when Royal Caribbean’s newest Icon Class ship makes its debut in August 2025. Ms. Ross will take the stage to welcome the ship, which will sail from Port Canaveral, Florida.

Diana Ross will be a cruise ship godmother for the second time

In her role as godmother, Ross will continue a long-standing nautical custom of granting safekeeping to the ship, its crew, and the millions of people who will sail on her. Ms. Ross will participate in a festive naming ceremony to commemorate Star‘s unveiling in the ship’s AquaTheater, situated in Star of the Seas‘ AquaDome neighborhood featuring panoramic views of the ocean.

“I am truly honored to join the Royal Caribbean family,” said Diana Ross in a press release.

“Having spent years of [sic] creating beautiful music and memories and bringing people together from all over the world, this feels like a perfect continuation of my journey as godmother of Star of the Seas,” Ross continued.

This isn’t the first time the entertainer has served as godmother to a cruise ship. In 1992, she christened Norwegian Dreamward (later renamed Norwegian Dream), a ship that sailed under the NCL brand until 2004.

The festivities will set the tone for what’s to come on Star of the Seas. Royal Caribbean’s concept for Star fuses beach retreats, resort getaways, and theme park experiences across her eight themed neighborhoods.

The new ship will feature heart-pounding thrills at Category 6 Waterpark, relaxation at any of her seven pools, a variety of entertainment options, including the production show “Back to the Future: The Musical,” more than 40 dining and drinking venues, including Lincoln Park Supper Club, and much more.

“We are thrilled to have Diana Ross join us for the debut of Star of the Seas, the next bold vacation in our revolutionary Icon Class designed to encompass the best a vacation experience can offer,” said Michael Bayley, Royal Caribbean’s president and CEO.

“We couldn’t imagine a more fitting godmother for Star than Diana Ross, who is a true icon known for creating music that transcends generations while celebrating life and bringing people together. We can’t wait to welcome Ms. Ross, our guests and crew to celebrate the arrival of Star this August.”

Beginning with her inaugural cruise on August 31, Star of the Seas will sail seven-night getaways to popular Eastern and Western Caribbean locations, including Royal Caribbean’s private island Perfect Day at CocoCay in the Bahamas.
